A total of 90 127 people from more than 180 countries attended ITB Berlin last week, cementing the trade show’s position as the leading platform for the global travel industry.

Back for the first time in three years as an exclusively B2B show, the three-day event from March 7-9 welcomed around 5 500 exhibitors from 161 countries, including Voyagers Zambia.

Ethiopian Airlines will commence a new direct flight between Addis Ababa and Harare from March 26. The airline will service the route three times a week on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. The new direct flight is in addition to the triangular route, Addis Ababa-Lusaka-Harare, which the airline currently operates. The schedule is as follows: Flight ET893 will depart Addis Ababa at 22h00 and arrive in Harare at 01h30 the next day. Flight ET892 will depart Harare at 02h15 and arrive in Addis Ababa at 07h45.

Eswatini Air is launching its direct non-stop flights between Eswatini and Johannesburg, Durban, Cape Town and Harare from March 26.

SAUDIA, in collaboration the Saudi Air Connectivity Programme (ACP) and the Saudi Tourism Authority, is launching flights to four new destinations including Johannesburg, Kano (Nigeria), Birmingham (UK), and Beijing.

The new direct flight routes are being launched in response to the increase in consumer demand from travellers looking to visit or transit through Saudi from these destinations.

St Helena has welcomed a new mid-week Airlink flight connecting the remote destination with Johannesburg from November 2023.

The new seasonal flight, which will operate on Tuesdays, will complement the regular scheduled flights to St Helena on Saturdays. The additional flight will be available during the Southern summer season, from November 28 to the end of February 2024.

Uganda Airlines reinstated its Wednesday flights between Entebbe and Johannesburg last week, with the route now serviced five times weekly. The Bombardier CRJ900 aircraft operates the Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Saturday flights, while the Airbus A330 flies every Friday.

The reinstated Wednesday flight schedule is as follows:

• Flight UR710 departs Entebbe at 16h20 and arrives in Johannesburg at 19h35.
• Flight UR711 departs Johannesburg at 20h35 and arrives in Entebbe at 01h50.

Malawi, the ‘Warm Heart of Africa’, is about to see a lot more tourists from South Africa, as SAA prepares to start its long-awaited flights to the country on Thursday, March 16.

The airline will operate a triangular schedule, on SA172, Johannesburg-Blantyre-Lilongwe-Blantyre-Johannesburg. Blantyre is Malawi’s second-largest city and the de facto commercial capital. Lilongwe is the largest city and the political capital and is closer to Lake Malawi, giving easy access to the Lake.

Air Mauritius is expanding access to the Indian market with the resumption of direct flights to New Delhi from May 3.

The flights will be offered twice a week, on Wednesdays and Saturdays, using an Airbus A330 aircraft. Flight MK744 will depart Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (MRU) at 21h15 and arrive in New Delhi at 06h15 the following day. Return flights will be on Thursdays and Sundays, with flight MK745 departing New Delhi at 08h00 and arriving at MRU at 14h00.
