Emirates
Emirates allow transit passengers from Zambia
from 06 August, 2021 and passengers from SA starting today. Emirates has published on its website a list of countries
from which travellers will be allowed to transit in Dubai, and South Africa is
on it.
Having left South Africa temporarily earlier this year, (the
last flight to Dubai was on January 16, 2021), the airline has had to
repeatedly extend its no-fly for South Africa, as the UAE would initially not
allow any flights from South Africa.
Then, on March 11, Emirates was allowed to resume daily
flights to Johannesburg but not to uplift passengers in Johannesburg, neither
to enter Dubai nor to transit through the airport. The flight from Johannesburg
to Dubai carried cargo.
Now the airline says “eligible customers” from South Africa,
Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Vietnam and Zambia will be allowed to
transit through UAE. It is still unknown what the eligibility criteria will be,
but it is probable that EK will start carrying passengers on its flights from
the commencement date, August 5, when the new regulations come into effect.

Germany opens to SA!
Lufthansa can now carry all SA and Namibian pax to Germany
Germany is set to welcome South Africans and Namibians from
August 1.
SA and Namibia are being downgraded from the classification:
virus variant areas to that of: areas of high risk.
This means that fully vaxxed travellers will no longer be
liable for quarantine on arrival, and for the unvaxxed, quarantine will be 10
days instead of 14 and can be ended after just five days with a negative PCR
test.
Additionally, there is no transport ban on travellers from
high-risk areas who do not have German or EU citizenship.
Dr André Schulz, Lufthansa General Manager Southern Africa
and East Africa, said this news would have a significant impact on the
airline’s day-to-day business. “It is welcomed by us all with great excitement
and elation. Based on these new regulations, the airlines of the Lufthansa
Group will continuously re-evaluate and adjust our capacity to meet the demand
according to our customers’ needs.”

Cathay Pacific will not return to SA this year
Cathay Pacific won’t be returning to South Africa this year
due to ongoing restrictions against South African travellers, but the airline
says it still sees commercial potential in resuming the Johannesburg-Hong Kong
route in the future. In the interim, the airline has put an interline agreement
in place with Emirates that allows inbound passengers to travel via Dubai to
Johannesburg, but not outbound passengers originating in South Africa.
“Cathay Pacific is yet to resume schedules to South Africa
but rest assured that we remain committed to servicing the Johannesburg route
as soon as the situation allows. In the interim, we are pleased to see the
resumption of our Hong Kong to Dubai flights with a twice-weekly schedule. As
part of our Dubai resumption, we have released fares from Shanghai and Beijing
to Johannesburg. This means that passengers can fly from Shanghai and Beijing
on Cathay Pacific to Dubai, via Hong Kong, and then interline from Dubai to
Johannesburg on a through ticket. We will continue to monitor the situation to
see how best we can assist during these times,” said the airline in a recent
statement distributed to its local travel trade partners.
